Skills and equipment
Every skill and piece of equipment on your profile is admin-verified. Here's how to add, edit, and re-verify.
Overview
Skills and equipment are the two levers that decide which jobs the Move Board shows you, which rate tiers you qualify for, and which trust badges customers see. This article covers how to add, remove, and verify both from /mover/profile and /mover/equipment.
Why this feature exists
Move Gigs Board matches jobs to movers by skill and by gear. A customer posting a piano move needs someone who has actually moved pianos and owns straps and a piano board. Skills are self-attested; equipment is counted, verified over time by move reports, and drives your tier.
Before You Begin
- Approved mover status
- Honest inventory of what you can do and what you own
- Photos of major equipment (optional but speeds verification)
Step-by-step instructions
Selecting your skills
1. Open the Skills card on `/mover/profile`. You will see grouped checkboxes: General (Loading, Unloading, Packing, Unpacking, Furniture Assembly), Trucks (U-Haul, Penske, Budget, POD), Specialty (Piano, Safe, Gun Safe, Antique, Fragile), Locations (Apartment, Office, Storage Unit, Long-Distance).
What happens next: every checked box becomes a searchable filter tag on the public directory.
2. Add or remove skills honestly. Only check skills you can perform without supervision.
What happens next: removing a skill hides you from those Move Board listings within a minute.
3. Save. Click Save Skills at the bottom of the card.
What happens next: your public profile updates immediately, and any active invites reflect the new skill set on next refresh.
Adding equipment
1. Open `/mover/equipment`. The page lists every equipment type with quantity fields.
What happens next: you see your current inventory and a "Verified" badge next to items confirmed on past moves.
2. Enter accurate counts. For countable items (blankets, straps, dollies), enter actual numbers. For binary items (truck: yes/no), toggle.
What happens next: the equipment tier is recomputed via recalculate_mover_equipment_tier.
3. Save. Click Save Equipment.
What happens next: your tier badge (Standard, Silver, Gold, Platinum) appears on your public profile. Customers filter by tier.
4. Get equipment verified. Verification happens automatically when a customer confirms on the post-move report that the equipment was on site.
What happens next: verified items count more toward your tier and unlock specialty-tier pricing.
Helpful Tips
- Blanket count matters. Twelve quilted blankets covers a 2-bedroom cleanly; six is not enough.
- If you buy a piano board or gun safe dolly, add it the same day — you become eligible for specialty jobs immediately.
- Take photos of high-value gear so admin can pre-verify large purchases.
Common Mistakes
- Over-selecting skills. Checking every box floods your inbox with jobs you cannot deliver. Bad reviews follow.
- Forgetting to update counts. Losing blankets on a job? Update after every gig.
- Assuming "own truck" means anything. Enter the make, model year, and box size in the notes so customers know what they are getting.
Troubleshooting
- New skill not showing on public profile. Hard refresh — cached HTML sometimes lingers 30 seconds.
- Tier did not upgrade after saving. Verified count matters, not just entered count. Complete a move and have the customer confirm the gear.
- Filter shows me for a skill I removed. Filters cache for a few minutes. It will drop off shortly.
Frequently Asked Questions
How is my equipment tier calculated? Standard (default), Silver (5+ verified items), Gold (10+ verified + own truck), Platinum (15+ verified + own truck + specialty gear). Exact rules live in mover_tier_eligibility.
Can I list equipment I rent? Only if you rent it for every job. Customers expect what is on your profile.
Do skills expire? No. But if you have not done a piano move in two years, consider removing the skill until you do one again.
